The school is committed to the overall development of all students. Since 2001 the school has continued to trial and evolve new syllabus initiatives in keeping with the government’s ETRF initiatives. The school participates in the Active Australia Program. Intervention programs are implemented including Support a Reader, Support a Writer, Support a Maths Learner and Reading Recovery. Students in Years 5 to 7 studied Japanese as their Language other than English.
Support within the school community is encouraged and parents accept an active role in their child's education. Teacher's employ co-operative planning processes in delivering programs to students and utilize the double teaching space to extend students with supportive activities. Intervention programs both diagnostic and supportive are employed to assist the special needs of students, and students are encouraged to participate in the extra curricular activities offered including the school camping program, recorder band, smart strings program, art exhibitions, school excursions and instrumental music.
In some cases we will be supported by our learning support teacher, or by other specialist teachers. Parents/Caregivers will be kept fully informed through the appraisement/ascertainment process. Appraisement/ascertainment are methods used by our Student Support Committee to identify students in need of support and to assess the level of support required.
Reading Recovery is an early intervention and prevention program. The program provides intensive, individual help mostly for year 2 students having difficulties in learning how to read and write after approximately one years schooling. Through daily individual lessons of 30 minutes, students are helped to make rapid progress, catching up to the class average usually within 20 weeks. After completion of the program, they are able to work independently and successfully with an average group of learners in their classroom without additional specialist help. This program will finish for Qld State Schools at the end of 2007 or 2008.
